The silk cotton trees along the roadside were in full bloom, and the focus of attention for several birds in the area. Unseasonal showers on 2 mornings disrupted some birding plans, but we took advantage of breaks in the rain to observe the silk cotton tree right outside our cottage which was around 20 km from Dehradun. The following birds were found to be frequent visitors:
Great Barbet
Brown-headed Barbet
Himalayan Bulbul
Black bulbul
Large-billed Crow
Plum-headed Parakeet
Ashy Drongo
Spangled drongo
Maroon oriole
Grey headed woodpecker
Grey Treepie
Red-billed blue magpie
Of these the spangled drongos were clearly the tyrants of the silk cotton tree, aggressively chasing away other birds which dared to spend too long on the tree. This was clicked 3 March '11.
Cheers,
Garima
