(delhibirdpix) The Commoners - # 61.08 - Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) - 2010-081

Wing Co. Sethi and I made a trip on 21st to Basai, where we had not
been for sometime.

Were fully rewarded with the sighting of Bar-Headed Geese and Waders
numbering in thousands. The temple area has been 'modernized' with
fancy and paved parking, A Wresters Arena and of course the boundary
and loud music. The reeds on either side of approach road have
disappeared and so have the birds - Munias, Snipes and the like. That
area is probably no longer good for birding. The next road is showing
healthy looking wheat on either side. The area to the east of the
drain is now full of birds but then you need to tolerate the stink.
But htat is where the birds are - in thousands.

Wing Co spotted Greater Flamingoes a long distance away - sighted
these there after 2003 only, may be others have seen. Mission now was
to reach the flamingoes for a breakfast with them. Did succeed. Do
not ask for directions to reach because I do not have the ability to
give these accurately - the GPS co-ordinates, however, are:
Latitude 36 11 57 N - Longitude 77 43 19 E - Altitude 223.00 if you
want find your way there. This place is also full of Waders -
Godwits, Stints etc seen in breeding plumage.

Here are some images of Flamingoes.

Cheers.
