Fwd: (delhibirdpix) harrier female for id ...najafgarh nov 2014

The Hen Harrier  (record shots only) .... in line for further confirmation ....... as Pankaj has already posted......... near Nazafgarh , Delhi , 28th Nov , 2014

As we were driving towards Sultanpur from Nazafgarh in a slumber after a hot afternoon's birding .... at about the Ghalibpur area on the narrow road between the fields on both sides ..... a sudden burst of activity startled us as a huge flock of Common Starlings,Mynas and Bank Mynas dashed straight into our car followed by this huge harrier in pursuit (right almost on to our car).

An equally large flock of weavers and about 30 odd Yellow Wagtails in the fields nearby were also flying around in panic as a bank myna crashed into our car through the rear window into the boot space ( with me sitting in the rear seat deleting old pics from the memory card to create space ). Pankaj stopped the car and we got out to open the car doors and boot to let out the poor myna to be relieved to see it jump out and fly away intact.

The Harrier came back suddenly again on Pankaj's side with the birds flying around in panic all around us.We took some pot shots but observed in the field that it looked quite big and aggressive (than the harriers we saw in Talchappar).Since the head looked quite dark in the field Pankaj called Pallid ......I did not disagree then but required to check the pics for further opinion(s).

The pic here ( though of poorer quality ) has a view of the front face with the white area above the eye visible for observation if it is of significance.I see that the other pics posted by Pankaj did not have this angle.

Retaining Pankaj's pic for comparison only.

(delhibirdpix) The Migratory Non- Passerines - # 17.01 - Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vaneluss) - 2014-377

Northern Lapwing is another bird with high luminance and iridescence
and hence it makes for for great viewing and that much more difficult to
capture on camera in it full glory.

Been waiting for a real long time - in fact, I think it is only the second time
I am sharing an image.

This morning was great to receive a call from Vikas that a pair was present
at our newly found Wetland at Dhanauri Kalan - rushed, the easy route was
blocked with a broken bridge and then the dirt road was a bit difficult to traverse
yet we made it.

Then the pair was there in its full glory - do not know if I have done justice to
the beauty of the bird.

Here are a couple of images from Dhanauri Kalan, (50 KMs SSE of Delhi),
Grater Noida, U.P.,India on 30th November 2014

Is it a connection or a co-incidence that I would run the vehicle in to a ditch/drain
every time I have an opportunity to look at this bird from reasonable close  distance.
It happened last year and it happened today.  Anyway, help was there.  Many thanks
to Wing Co., Vikas, Rajiv Ranjan, Sarkar, Kavi and in particular to Yogesh who did
a lot of  the hard work.

Cheers.

Species: Kalij Pheasant (male juv) and White-Crested Laughing Thrush
Place: Chaffi nr Sattal, UK
Date: 03 October 2014

Equipment: Sony Alpha 37 + Tamaron 70-300mm macro lens

Behind a small house near Chaffi is a forested hillside. Across the road in front of the house is a gurgling river/brook and a hillside beyond. A family of Kalij Pheasants, Male and Female with 5 juveniles make their way down the hillside across the river and busy road to the forested hillside behind. Close to sundown they wind their way carefully to the backyard of the house to feed on grain scattered there. They are given company by White-Crested Laughing Thrushes and Grey Treepies. We enjoyed two lovely evenings one with the Kalij and the other without watching the birds feeding.
