[BirdPhotoIndia] 70+ Great Knots Together!!

On date 5/1/2010 me my friend Dr. Maulik Varu & Kapilsinh Zala went for birding at the saltpan areas near Jamangar (Gujarat). While watching through binoculars we saw about 70 unidentified waders along with 300+ bar-tailed godwits, 100+ oystercatchers & 200+ crab plovers. We tried going near them but they were very sensitive. I had my camera so I crawled towards them for very long & managed to get some images. After coming home with great surprise we identified the birds as Great Knots. My papa had visited the place just the day before we went there (on 4th Jan 2010). I went through his photos & found a very huge group of same birds in flight! We didn't notice the image before & the group was mixed with Bar-tailed Godwits so we over looked it. It was an amazing experience. Thought of sharing it with you all before my exams.... :)

Happy Birding!

[BirdPhotoIndia] Sri Lanka hanging parrot, Sinharaja

A decision to step off the vehicle and walk up to Martin's lodge on our arrival the first evening proved fortuitous as we were graced with fabulous views of several SL endemics, including this cute hanging parrot which obligingly posed on a bare branch at eye level. Needless to say, we spent an hour or so there and had barely walked a few metres when the vehicle returned to pick us up after dropping our lggage.

[BirdPhotoIndia] Sri Lanka grey hornbill, Sinharaja

The dining area at Martin's lodge had a fantastic view of the surrounding Sinharaja forest, and we got to see quite a few species right from there, especially when we were loath to venture out in the cold and rainy weather. This hornbill showed up when we were relaxing there post lunch, and this shot was obtained by jumping out on the precarious asbestos roofing in search of a good vantage point. Only regret was that I didn't get the full bird.

Looks like the hornbill is regurgitating some lunch.
Nov 1st, Sinharaja forest.

(delhibirdpix) Dadri Wetland 28 Nov 10 Report

Sat the 27 was a bright day with the Sun very generous with the light ideal
for bird watching and photography during the hazy winter days. Missed Sat
for birding and was hoping that Sun would be the same.
Early morning Anand, Self, Mayangand the man Friday Bimal.

The morning was cold with mild ground fog. By the time we reached past G
Noida the fog seemed to lift and on the east the fire ball greeted us as we
were entering the dadri area. The first stpp over was the Black neacked
Stork with the three chicks high in their nest. The moma was away for food
and in the cold morning with the sun rays just casting the golden light on
the chicks. Watched the Moma fly in with food and the mail busy collecting
twigs to rebuild the nest to prevent the chicks from falling.

The first turn into the village and Anand spotted the common myna which was
not so common-it was the Myna Common (Leucistic) sitting on the ground
feeding. We were just a few feet from the bird when a truck behind us let go
a cocophony of the horn and the bird was gone. We maqnaged to get some good
photos before it disappeared.

The sun by this time was nice and bright. The WT Kingfisher was the next
exiting catch. Dived into the water and was back in a jiffy with a king size
fish in its beak. Took almost 5 min before it killed the fish to permit it
to swallow the fish.
We next saw the Pied Kingfisher hovering followed by the common kingfisher.
All four egrets, the three goose-barheaded, greylag and the cotton pygmy,

The spoonbill, openbill, the painted stork, followed by the ibib black and
black headed. We then drove to the temple and took the track leading to the
marsh. As we reached we heard fire crackers-marriage party and then the
sight was out of this world-thousands and thousands of ducks-goose took to
the air. 270 degrees and one could see the flocks blackening the sky. We
left the cameras and just watched this spectacular sight. A villages
estimated the numbers to one lacs. I feel about 30000 to 50000 birds had
taken off at that moment. They later settled on the far side towards the
boundary wall near the highway. More than three Marsh Harriers around to
flush the duck.

A great day. Dadri is going strong and if it rains the same next year we
will have Dadri for another year.

The list is attached, Add the tufted Duck to the list Images will follow

[BirdPhotoIndia] Sri Lanka Endemics #7.1

The female Crested Treeswift (Hemiprocne coronata) despite not being too colorful is one of the prettiest birds and one of my favorites. After always seeing them high on treetops, this framebusting, eye level shot was a dream come true to say the least. But seeing a bare tree draped with Crested Treeswifts was certainly an experience.

[BirdPhotoIndia] Sri Lanka Endemics #9 + trip report

When I first saw the illustration in the field guide I wondered if a bird could be coloured in such shades, and when I actually did see the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie (Urocissa ornata) I realised that the colors were stronger on the bird.
This bird classified as vulnerable, shot at Sinharaja on the 1st of Nov '20
