(delhibirdpix) South India Trip-Hesserghatta-bangalore-Common Kestrel

Wishing you a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year

Some of the birding visits to Bangalore, Chennai, and Point Calimere

Thanks to Nitin for the birding in Bangalore. We did two trips to Hesserghatta lake bed. The first trip on the 9 th mainly to see the Raptors. The lake has some water but most of it is dry and with grass land and some trees that have been planted which in the end will destroy the grass land.
The first trip just saw two raptors-the Brahmini Kite and the Common Kestrel. Our aim was to spot the Raptors, as such we did see some waders sandpiper green, wood and common. The booted warbler was in a feeding frenzy and was a good model for the photographers. Yellow Billed Babbler, Tawny Babbler, Number of Bay Backed Shrikes, Black Drongo, Pipit, Rosy Starlings, Buchchat Pied male and female I will post the image of the female which is a little different from what we see in the north, Grey Francolin, Barn Swallow, Painted Stork, Cormorant Indian, Pelican Spot Billed, all egrets etc

Having missed the Raptors on this trip, Nitin And I decided to do another trip in the evening on the 14 Dec. The sightings were more or less the same with the raptors added to the list-Sparrow hawk, Marsh harrier male which was a lifer for me. Finally at near sunset Nitin took me a surprise area-at least 20 marsh harrier coming in for roosting, with one lone Pallied harrier. Watching the Harrier land in the field and then fly off to the final roosting place was a sight not seen earlier. Thanks Nitin. The last day a Bangalore we moved to Chennai for a 15 days trip.

On 17 did a trip to the Pallikarannai Marsh on the OMR and the Classic farms to see the Marsh land adjoining the Classic farms and the link road. This was followed by another trip with Sonika form Delhi bird and we also covered Kolvalam. The link road from OMR to the East coast Road.

At the Pallikarannai we saw grey headed lapwing, Bee eater green, Swaphens in large numbers, Terns, Jacana Pheasant Tailed, Openbill, Spoonbill, Painted stork, Common coot, Fulvous whistling Duck, Coot nesting with Chick, Egret great, Intermedite and cattle, Grebe little, pelican Spotbilled. A large number of waders but a distance, Sandpiper wood, green and the plovers were seen. A vist to Kovalam was rewarded with the Eurasian Curlew, a large no of Pelican Spot billed, there is a heronary in the Ocean Institute in the area,  as it is a restricted area we were unable to get a good view. A pair of pied kingfisher at Kovalam, tern Caspian, Brown Headed Gull, Yellow wattled lapwing, red wattled, Terns to be Ided etc.
A thrid trip on the 29 we saw a large number of waders that had arrived. One single Common snipe, the the final sight of the osprey with a fish flying over head and final settled on the pylon to feast

The family made a trip to Point Calimere. Thanks to Dr Balachandran, we had the help of the guide at the site. The highlights were the little tern, Gull billed tern, Brown Headed gull, large no of painted stork, Egrets all types, Brahmini kite, Spotted dove, Blue Cheeked Bee Eater, Curlew Eurasian, Common sandpiper. Plover little ringed. The number of birds was less and the migratory birds would be three only by mid Jan.

The last visit was on the 28 to pulicate lake. The water has dried up and the area under water has reduced considerably. In spite of that we saw a large number of Flamingos in flocks of 300 to 500, and more that 10 such flocks along the drive from the main road and then on the road to Sriharikota and the dirt track to the right, Large number of waders with the little stint and the Little ringed plover, sandpiper, Ashy crowned, Pipit, grey heron, Shrike, Black winged Kite, Kestrel Common, and the surprise was seeing almost 2000 northern Pintails. Etc.

A nice birding trip with the family. The grandkids kept us on our feet and we loved very moment of our stay.

(delhibirdpix) Retrospective-2013

Hi Birders wish you all a very Happy & Prosperous New Year 2014!

Like every year I take this opportunity to sum up all important bird sightings of the bygone year from Delhi. It reminds me of 'Binaka Geet Mala', which used to be anchored by Ameen Sayani every Wednesday. Every year end he would compile & play all the hit songs of the year on the New Year Eve .I am here to compile all hit birds of year that went.

This retrospective compilation of birds in NCR gives an idea about the status of all the habitats, their degradation and improvements, along with the involvement of more and more nature enthusiasts. Well! It was a fantastic year for birds .Rarities started showing up right from the February BBD-2013 itself. White Capped Buntings & Red Headed Vultures in Bhatti Mines by team JNU ,followed by sighting of Marbled Teal, Black Stork  and recently reported Greater White Fronted Goose & Kashmir Flycatcher by Rakesh Ahlawat & Yogesh Parasher respectively from Dighal. Long billed Dowitcher  and Baikal Teal in Sultanpur National Park by American & Indian birders .In the beginning of March Verditer Flycatcher from Sanjay Van, by Thejus & I, were few important  highlights from southern ridge ,which was again reported from SNP by Anand Arya & Wingco in November.   Indian Pitta also reported in SNP in Sept-Oct by a group of Indian Bird.

March proved to be more productive month as Praduyt reported Greater Adjutant Stork from Najafgarh with photographs posted on IB.  Brahmany Kite (Sub-Adult) also found its entry in Najafgarh which caught attention of Pankaj Gupta.

Summer was not less exciting as Great Pied Hornbill was sighted at Aravalli Biodiversity Park by Yasir Arafat followed by Dr. Rajeeve Khanna's sighting and photography of Great Bitten from Najafgarh during monsoon. Bristle Grass Birds (5, nests, 2+3) and Indian Night Jar from Dadri & Surajpur by delhibird and IB group were also highlights of the bygone year during July-August.

On the opening of SNP in the middle of October Savitri Singh & Ramgopal reported Ultramarine & Rusty Tail Flycatchers from SNP. Eurasian Hobby also marked its presence from Najafgarh areas recently.

Jack Snipe was recorded during March & September by Nikhil Devaser and later by M.Srinivas from Basai respectively. While December was full of election excitement, Chandra, Manish & I were obliged by sightings of Grey Bushchat & Dark Throated Thrush from JNU on 4th & 8th December incidentally Anand Arya also recorded Grey Bushchat from Surajpur Bird Sanctuary on 4th December.

In 2013 Asian Paradise Flycatchers & European Rollars obliged almost every photographer of Delhibird. Water Rail, Water Pipit and the Moustached Warbler from Basai, Haryana &  Great Tit from Hauz Khas by Chandra Maurya  in Dec 2013. An untamed wild Leopard form Manger Bani ridge was caught at last in camera trap by Dr. Koustub Sharma.
Over all 2013 was very good for birding which could have been better had we scanned Mohamadabad Marshes, KJ, MJ wet lands and Rajokari. Delhibird also missed couple of prominent delhibirders who were always a great help in identifying birds.
Painted Snipes gave a big miss in 2013 except couple of sightings from Basai which is an indication of dying wetlands in NCR. Jagatpur Khadar ( YBDP) was an excellent place for Red Crested Poachard. We spotted 60-70 RCP in January 2013 & same number at same place on 25th December as well..
The reason for good birding and more rare birds in my opinion could be attributed to 'more number of bird watchers' in NCR with 'more expert guidance involving locals' who were always there in the fields to see the birds for 365 days, especially Rakesh Ahlawat and Sanjay Sharma.
Second reason which can be attributed here IMO that there used to be only one birdgroup earlier and now there are '4 groups like Delhibird, Indian Bird, BNHS & one private group'  therefore, on an average 9-10 birders explore 4 different places on every weekend  (barring individual walks) which has proved more productive.
It would be unfair if credit is not given to 'modern technology (Bird Watching Gears)' that includes digital cameras, better spotting scopes and various electronic gadgets, groups and social networking that spread awareness, share photographs and information related to birds & conservation issues.
But to conclude with, the annual sightings of the birds, the count is going down with each passing year despite new sighting records with an alarming rate because of habitat loss & development activities in NCR.
Wish you all once again a very happy new year!

Happy Birding

(delhibirdpix) Flycatchers for ID

Hello all,

Taken today at Nandi Hills. While flycatcher 1 has every other characteristic that would point at Asian Brown, it lacks the pale mandible. I am clueless about flycatcher 2.

Thanks,

Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons, (Scopoli, 1769))

A Rarity for India....this goose turns up in Western India in very small numbers.

We were lucky to sight 1 Lesser and 4 Greater White-fronted Goose in Little Rann of Kutch on 25th Dec. 2013. with the help of my dear friend Shreeram MV. Who sighted it first and let use know the place. I called him up at midnight 24th and talked abt the birds...and It was sleepless night, called some other friends Kunan Naik, Yagnesh Bhatt, Krinal Kiran Hedau...and we all set to drive whole night to reach the location in time. It was the best Christmas I ever had...First glance with Binocs and bullzeye to Lesser White fronted Goose....

(delhibirdpix) Great eared Nightjar at day perch Trivandrum,Kerala

Here I attached the image of Great-eared Nightjar-Eurostopodus macrotis on it's day perch at Trivandrum,Kerala,India during 30th December 2013.
Great eared Nightjar is a  nocturnal bird seen in evergreen and moist deciduous forests.Very difficult to find this bird in day perch.

I am grateful to my friend and Bird/wildlife photographer  Biju Pb for inform me about this rather uncommon night bird's day perch.Thanx to Anpin Raja and Arun Raja for provide all back support(hospitality) and encouragement to take photographs.
Wish all delhibirdpix  members a very very happy new year with happy birding and blessings of mother nature
with warm regards

[BirdPhotoIndia] Marbled Duck

Got this rare duck in Badopal, Hanumangarh Dist, north Rajasthan. There were three of them in a water body, 20 km north-west of Suratgarh. It was very foggy and hence this poor colourless shot.
