Subject: (delhibirdpix) Fwd: Asola today - 04 Apr 10
Inspite of the short notice, seven of us – Dr Yogesh, Nilanjana, Pankaj, Sauradh, Chandan, Rita and I – turned up at Asola this morning for a short walk through the scrub forest there. The usual residents of the area Common & jungle Babblers, Redvented, Red-whiskered & White-cheeked Bulbuls, Large Grey, jungle, Yellow-eyed & Common Babblers, Laughing Doves, Purple Sunbirds, Coppersmith Barbets, Greater Coucal, Ashy, Grey-breasted & Rufous-fronted Prinia, Grey Hornbills, Yellow-legged Pigeons, Shikra, Indian Robin, Black-shouldered Kite, Long-tailed Shrike, Green Bee-eaters etc. Loud songs of many Oriental Magpie robins rent the morning air and a few Eurasian Thicknee were at their usual haunt inside the Blackbuck enclosure. A female Yellow-crowned Woodpecker, tapping away on a nearby tree, also delighted everyone with some good views.
A good number of winter or passage migrants were still lingering - many Black Redstarts, scores of Common Rosefinch flying about or feeding on mulberry trees and a couple of Red-throated Flycatchers that were picked out by their calls. Also many Lesser Whitethroats, Siberian Chiffchaffs, a Booted Warbler and, quite surprisingly for the site, a very fresh plumaged Paddyfield Warbler actively feeding amongst the low foliage. Later in the morning, while we were enjoying the usual fine breakfast spread, a juvenile Bonelli's Eagle was seen soaring overhead to round off a nice summer morning birding within the capital city.
Happy birding.
