sharing the last photo of the enigmatic Malayan Night Heron (adult) spotted at the Jainti range of Buxa Tiger Reserve.
This extremely rare bird was seen during the early morning jungle safari at Buxa (on 8th June 2010).
Malayan Night Heron is a shy secretive bird of the dense tropical forests of North East India...and is rarely seen in the Bengal Duars. There had been only a few previous sightings of the bird in the Gorumara NP region...
and this is the first record of the rare beauty from the Buxa Tiger Reserve area.
i came to know from the forest-guides and drivers of Jainti that they had never seen this bird earlier in these forests.....our driver Mr.Ratan told me that he had been seeing a queer brown bird with black crest in the forests from the first week of June....and he called it a " bideshi paakhi" (meaning foreign bird)....At that time, i could hardly recognize the bird from his description.
I had no idea that the bird he was talking about wud turn out to be the elusive Malayan Night Heron.

Wud love to hear about the exact status of this bird in West Bengal Duars..from the experts. What is the possibility of the existence of breeding populations of this species in the Duars forests??
Is there any recent record of the bird from the North-East (Arunachal, Meghalaya, Assam)??
