[BirdPhotoIndia] Intermediate Egret, Fledgling, Preening

Common Name: Intermediate Egret

Species Name: Mesophoyx intermedia

Location: Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh; in my hospital campus

Date taken: 18.09.2010

Equipment: Nikon D90 + Nikkor 70-300 mm AF VR Zoom Lens

Special Remarks:
1. Preening is observed in Intermediate Egret chicks as early as four days post-hatching, when it may be observed nibbling its ventral tract feathers. As it grows older, it progressively begins to preen more accessible feather tracts, (Ref: Herons, egrets and bitterns: their biology and conservation in Australia By Neil McKilligan)
2. Note the Nictitating Membrane (closed).
