Re: (delhibirdpix) Norms of Names

These drawings are from "Birds around Fort St. George.", shared with us by Mr. Bikram Grewal.Thank you Sir.
Interesting to see the depiction and the names given to the birds. We have indeed come a long way!

I wonder what could be the "Madrass Sea-Crow"

Motacilla maderaspatensis was named after  report sent my Edward Buckley in 1713 called 'Birds around Fort St. George.' It was published (in Latin) in John Ray's Synopsis metohdica avium et Picium as a 'mantissa' . Gmelin described the Indian Pied Wagtail from these drawings. I have these drawings with me but since no attachments are allowed, I cant attach these.

Also see Kolkatabirds.com for a seres of articles I put together called "whats in a name!' and "I vow to thee my country"
This will give you some idea about the background of how birds were names

One that comes to mind is Motacilla maderaspatensis, it may now appear that the name was derived from a name of a city, but back in those days, madras was more of a region than a city.

Yes, toponyms are usually less specific (e.g. himalayensis, indicus,
americanus, bengalensis, etc.). I don't know enough about how the name
Amandava was assigned to comment in more detail. I can't think of any
other city-based toponym offhand, but perhaps there are some. Avadavat
is also a corruption of Ahmedabad, by the way; and this is why I still
call the bird "Red Munia" and not "Red Avadavat".
