Mottled Wood-owl (Strix ocellata)

Taken at GIR National Park Dec - 2007

This is the Strix ocellata grandis, a subspecies restricted to W India (Kathiawar Peninsula of s Gujarat) described by Walter Norman Koelz in (Koelz) 1950. American Museum Novitates, 1452, p. 4.Differs from nominate ocellata by having much larger size and similar in color but averaging more grayer. Also not size of black areas in back and nape is reduced.
