[BirdPhotoIndia] Banipur (Dibrugarh Railway Station) - 1

8th March 2011, Banipur (Dibrugarh Railway Station).

It so happened that I had to drop off a friend at the new Dibrugarh Railway
Station located at the outskirts at Banipur. According to locals here, this
new station has been built on a wetland having a rich diversity of avifauna.
Since the train left at 7:00 am I went for a brief birding trip after seeing
him off.

I drove along the circular road in front of the station from 7:00 am IST to
7:45 am IST. Most of the birding was done from the vehicle itself. I did get
down from the vehicle once or twice to have a closer look at some Striated
Grassbirds. It was obvious from the topography that the area was a low lying
one and must have been a wetland, especially during the monsoons. At this
time of the year the area was mostly dry with one large pool of water and
2-3 smaller pools. The wetter areas had the common waders and the drier
patches had wagtails, pipits, Red-wattled Lapwings etc. I was pleasantly
surprised to see 4-5 Striated Grassbirds at one portion which had some low
bushes.

The list of birds spotted today was as follows:

1. Common Myna
2. House Crow
3. Eurasian Tree Sparrow
4. Asian Pied Starling
5. Olive-backed Pipit
6. Paddyfield Pipit
7. Indian Pond Heron
8. Bronze-winged Jacana (Immature)
9. Plain Prinia
10. Paddyfield Pipit
11. White-breasted Kingfisher
12. Common Kingfisher
13. Black Kite
14. Little Cormorant
15. Grey Wagtail
16. White Wagtail
17. Citrine Wagtail
18. Red-wattled Lapwing
19. White-breasted Waterhen
20. Intermediate Egret
21. Green Sandpiper
22. Siberian Stonechat
23. Red-vented Bulbul

Photos of the Striated Grassbird and White-breasted Waterhen are attached.

Another wetland gone, I think.

Regards

Raj
