[BirdPhotoIndia] Widening of NH 34 threatens Ahiron Wetland of Murshidabad, West Bengal

Hi Folks,
Last Sunday (6/3/11) I was going to Tarapith for worship with my family members. We stopped at Ahiron wetland of Murshidabad for a usual tea break. There I found what exactly I had thought would happen to Ahiron. A JCB was digging soil from the very exact location where I had taken photo of a Purple Swamphen. This canal is not within the main wetland but is located on the east side of the National High 34 and between NH and Railway tract. Birders who already visited ahiron must have noticed this. This canal is good for warblers, Swamphens, coot and Indian Moorhen. In my last visit in December, 2010 I had seen nearly 2000 ducks with many Fulvous Whistling-duck. This is the location where i last saw my Pallas's Fish Eagle in January, 1999.
The future of Ahiron Wetland is not bright. The new campus of Aligarh Muslim University is going to develop several new constructions close to Ahiron. The present bus stop of Ahiron would become bigger one and with time new shops to follow. The present bus stop is located within 200 feet from the main wetland.Attached  is a photograph showing a JCB digging soil from the exact location where I had photographed a Purple Swamphen. In another mail I am sending the photo of that Swamphen.

P.S Ahiron is one of the nationally most important wetland of India

 Regards,
