(delhibirdpix) Indian Pitta

The Indian pitta ( Pitta brachyura) is a summer breeder at Chandigarh it is known to arrive in May. The best place to see it is  Chandi- Mandir. I am sure there is a healthy population in the Nepli -kansal forest range but I need to check it out specialy considering I saw one in sector 10 the other day.
Today inspite of bad weather four of us Mrs Geeta Goswami,Mrs Rima Dhillon ,Dr Mandeep Kang and self were out on mission Pitta to Chandimandir. We were geeted by the Pittas at their favourite spot and saw two breeding pairs the first pair was spotted even before they started calling. The Pittas  were very busy carrying nesting material up into a tree where a platform was clearly visible . I somehow carried the wrong impression that it is a ground breeder (I suppose this idea came from the fact that it spends a lot of time on the ground hunting for grubs and insects ) now one knows better.
