Looking back at the ruffled Past !!
I still remember, as a child, we used to see 100's of Vultures even in Mumbai. However, the change in Carcass disposal along with Diclofenac has caused doom to their survival. No other bird species is known to experience a negative impact from the human intervention as severe as the Vultures in India. The rapid decline in their numbers in such a short span is an indication of how humans can disturb the natural food chain. The decline in Vulture population is also now been linked / lead to the rapid increase in rabies cases (http://www.vulturedeclines.org/page7.html ) It is high time that the authorities realize and take serious measures to look in the matter and avert the ghastly effects that could follow.
Fortunately there are few pockets where they still thrive and are our last hope to the existence of this wonderful scavenger. Bandhavgarh National Park (Madhya Pradesh) is one such place, where 5 species of vultures can still be seen regularly.... May their tribe increase !!
