"Baba Yaga" – The Dalmatian Pelican !!

The name Dalmatian comes from a historical region of Croatia - Dalmatia, where this species supposedly originated (In Mediterranean region). Ironically the Dalmatian Pelicans are now extinct from Croatia. This species of pelican has declined greatly throughout its range. There were once, millions of Dalmatian Pelicans in Romania alone. During the 20th century, the species numbers underwent a dramatic decline due to habitat loss and human activities like the drainage of wetlands and land development and also because of their perceived competition with commercial and recreational fishers. Another reason for the decline in the species population is poaching. In Mongolia, the local people stealthily kill these pelicans to use or sell their bills as pouches. Nomads use the upper mandible of pelican bills to groom their horses because they believe that using the pelican beak makes their animals stronger and faster.....and they are considered such a rare prize that a single pelican can be traded for ten horses and thirty sheep. Now they are critically endangered in Mongolia. In Greece, pelicans are often so disturbed by boats, usually the ones used by tourists that they become unable to feed and die of malnourishment.

The Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus) is the largest among all the Pelicans in the World and also one of the largest living bird species weighing over 12 kgs and a wingspan of almost 11 ft, also making it probably India's largest bird species proportionate to size: weight.

The large size, "punk" hairstyle, white iris and dark legs is what separates this species from our other Pelican species found in India.... and are best seen in Gujarat.... To know why it is called Baba Yaga in Russian folklore? You will have to read this...
