The forest guard and the bird guide at Nameri urged us towards the larger bheel/waterbody, Bogoribari, as the rarely seen White-winged Duck was guaranteed to be there. We trudged swiftly with a 'mission', almost ignoring the other birds en route. The first look at Bogoribari and I knew the duck wouldnt be there, as it was an open waterbody under the bright sky, and not under the dark canopy of trees, where, I have read they like to be.
Mid-way, on the walk back, he took a right turn into the forest again, his body language one of resignation to another disappointment, as, if the WWD wasnt at Bogoribari, it will not be at Moniram bheel either. And indeed he was right. We scoured the lake back and forth hiding behind a shrub, as if looking for a lost gold pin at the edges of the lake. As I allowed my binoculars to linger one last time on the dark, desolate lake, in flew the duck - literally into our binocs!
What an ecstatic moment!
