This morning I got an sos call from a neighbour saying that a hen-like bird had fled into their house after being chased and pecked at by crows. They were trying to get it caught and asked me if I could release it somewhere. When I arrived I found it on the bed and then it flew up to the fan and subsequently on to the tube light - a free spirit caught in a helpless situation - it looked so incongruous and sad. I requested the person who was trying to catch it to stop, switched off the light after taking a few quick shots for identification. Sumit Sen answered the id question - a female Watercock - it looked a little small - so I wonder if it could be an immature one. Quite a mystery how such a bird could land up in a concrete neighbourhood. Sumit thinks it may have been flying over the area and somehow found itself in this precarious situation.
Anyway,Sudipto Roy helped me to get in touch with Bikram Guha Roy of Nature Mates, and the latter has made arrangements for its rescue and release tomorrow morning. The bird is in a safe place and has been given food and water.
