Re: (delhibirdpix) Fwd: URGENT Id Request

Dear All,

Sushmita asked me to post 4 photos of the mystery juv. crane that she sent me originally, and I think they will be helpful.  Note the bright pink base of the beak, the head much larger than that of the Demoiselles, the very thick legs as seen in one of the photos, and the head and neck coloration fitting Rasmussen's description of a juv. Sarus (again, I'm not 100% certain that's what it is, but it's my best guess).

Cheers,
Hans

It is very much an immature Common Crane, and no it is not unusual.

A three member team of Sushmita, Rita and I spent a few hours in fog-filled Tal Chapar yesterday. Near the sanctuary in the village of Charvasa, amidst a huge flock of Demoiseille Cranes, was this immature crane. It was much larger than the adult cranes it stood with. One realistic possibility we thought was that it may be a juvenile Sarus, given the brown nape. Thanks to Arka, Tim and Hans, it was identified as a juvenile Common Crane. Pooniaji confirmed the presence of Common Cranes in the area. It was puzzling why it should be amongst the Demoisellie Cranes (it even flew off with the flock) - probably it had strayed away from its own kind.
