(delhibirdpix) Wintering Striolated Bunting near Bijnore. UP

Species: Striolated Bunting – Emberiza striolata – Male

Date: 12th April 2014.

Location: Madhya Ganga Barrage, near Bijnore, UP. India

Coordinates: 29.377°N 78.0337°E. Altitude: 217.38 masl.

Habitat: Scrubby embankment of a river.

Status: Least Concern

Remarks: The bird was noticed perched on a tree against light and looked similar to a Rock Bunting. Soon it descended on the levee of the Ganga river, and started to forage in the sparse vegetation cropping from the partially metaled bund revealing the diagnostic darker upper mandible and yellow lower mandible. Two male birds were sighted feeding separately. It is indeed interesting to find this species wintering much North of its range near Uttrakhand border.
