Dear All,
I'm attaching an image of a Raven that I had captured on the Panjab University campus, Chandigarh on the evening of 26th July 2014, in the company of Navtej Singh.
I posted this image in my Google Plus photo stream on 27th July, and though I had captioned it, "Common Raven (Corvus corax)", I had also requested an ID confirmation, since I wasn't absolutely sure.
On 30th July, Sumit Sen posted the following comment: "Not really sure Jasbir. seems to be in moult. Can't rule out Large-billed Crow."
Subsequently, I received an interesting comment from Tim Inskipp early this morning, and the same is copied below, and highlighted in yellow.
The Chandigarh Bird List that was circulated by Narbir Kahlon includes the Corvus Corax Subcorax, but lists it as a "Common Raven".
Is the species in the Chandigarh list the same as the "Punjab Raven" Corvus (corax) subcorax? The image posted on Picasaweb (see link below) is far too small for comparison.
Looking forward to receiving your responses/clarification.
Cheers!
Warm regards,
Jasbir

The bill is much too large for a Large-billed Crow, especially of the local race (species?) Indian Jungle Crow C. (m.) culminatus. IMO it's clearly a Punjab Raven C. (corax) subcorax, of which I have just been viewing another image from Chandigarh by Jasbir S Randhawa. Although not mapped from this area it was recorded in the past by Whistler (1918, JBNHS 25) who saw a few individuals in Ambala district and noted that Beavan in 1866 had found it fairly widespread in winter and found one nest in March.

Jasbir, it must be a Punjab Raven Corvus (corax) subcorax. The bill is much too massive for any Large-billed Crow - it's even bigger than some of the Punjab Ravens on Oriental Bird Images! Although not mapped for this area it was recorded in the past: Whistler (1918, JBNHS 25) saw a handful in Ambala district, and noted that previously Beavan had found them more generally in the winter and found a nest with a nearly fledged young one on 28 March 1866. There do not seem to be subsequent records east of Harike so its a significant record. Have you seen it again? Reply to this email to comment publicly on Google+. Or view photo » |
