Walong, Anjaw, Arunachal Pradesh. 21st April, 2014.
China lost an endemic and India gained a bird in its list with the record of this bird from Walong in March 2014, by Chewang and Jainy. A month later in April, we found this to be an easy bird to see in pine habitats above ~6500 ft. Walong is on easternmost corner of the country in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh. The earlier known range of this bird extended to Zayu in SE Tibet, which is just on the other side of the border. So finding this bird here was possibly not surprising. This remote region has not been ornithologically explored adequately. The difficulty is compounded by the restrictions imposed by the army. But the area promises many interesting records. For example, we heard the unmistakable call of Koklass Pheasant which is not known from NE India but documented to occur on the other side of the border in Tibet.
