(delhibirdpix) The Commoners - # 181.01 - Lesser Florican (Sypheotides indicus) - 2015-166

It is wrong to label this Critically Endangered and  Beautiful Bird a 'Commoner'
- a term that I use for the Resident Bird Species and Breeding in India.

It is indeed not a 'Commoner' - just about less that 1500 Mature Birds surviving
currently.  Distribution of Species is said to be all over India - more or less.  It has
also been reported twice from the now Late Dadri Wetland that I used to frequent.

It was high on my wish list for a long time.  Known to be seen during breeding period
quite easily at Shokalia (I do not know why almost every one was naming the place
as 'Sonkhalia' - Google Search did not find any hits on Sonkhalia.  We learnt the
correct name from the forester and it was on the Name Board of the School).

We did find but were not lucky enough to watch is close by and in good 'photographic
light' - it rained as we arrived in to the area and stayed cloudy all through but the rain
held off for the period we were at the 'site'.

Very difficult to find the bird unless it does its 'trade-mark jump'.

Here is the Lesser Florican - Male in Breeding Plumage at Shokalia, Ajmer, Rajasthan,
India on 12th August 2015

Also a Video Link made from several video clips.
