Himalayan Woodpecker male | Chopta, Uttarakhand | 13th June 2013
This is one of the most commonly encountered woodpecker species in the Himalayas. Sized around 25cms the facial markings extending up behind the ear-coverts but not down to black back are the identification features of this species. The male has entire crown red as seen in the image. Habitat varies from montane oak to rhododendron and coniferous forest.
The all black background is due to the dense foliage in the back where the light was not able to penetrate inside.
