After noting that Suman's fine photo of a juv. Shikra (OBPIX, Sept. 19) shows crural tracts (leg feathers) that are at least partly barred, I withdraw my earlier claim (Sept. 4) that Jitender Dhir's Accipiter photo (posted on Aug. 29 to Delibirdpix) had to be of a juv. Crested Goshawk because of its barred (rather than spotted) leg feathers. A number of other traits indicate that in fact it is a Shikra, as Jitender surmised. It is unfortunate that what is believed to be a major diagnostic of the Crested Goshawk, the barred crurals, is invalid. The condition is also seen in some juv. Shikras.
